I wanted to create a typeface which was the ultimate balance between ornament and substance; a fusion of ‘modernist’ sans serif styles of the 20th century and hand-rendered blackletter styles of medieval Europe. Loosely based on the proportions of DIN Light (Deutsch Industrie Norm), Qufu Sans is designed to be incredibly legible even at a distance. Certain features of blackletter such as stroke angles and extended curves have been interpreted and adapted to add an interesting ‘twist’ without sacrificing clarity or legibility.
